Strikeforce Signs to EA MMA
Nov 07, 2009 - 4:15 AM - by lost

EA continues to add licensed assets to their new MMA game and has signed Strikeforce. See below for a fairly apt description of what that means.

Quote:
EA Sports, I explained, had signed with Strikeforce to appear in its upcoming mixed martial arts title, EA Sports MMA. Knowing he was a fan of sports like UFC, I asked him if he thought this was a big deal.

"Put it this way," he tells me. "If the Nintendo DS is the UFC, then the PSPgo is Strikeforce," he explains. I asked him to clarify -- does this mean that Strikeforce has better graphics and crappier battery life, but you can control UFC president Dana White with a stylus? He doesn't answer.

"They really only have one or two fighters worth watching," he continues.

"Do those guys happen to be Brett Rogers and Jake Shields? Because those two are signed on for EA Sports MMA," I tell him.
More from Destructoid.

I don't get EA's strategy for this, its like they're just buying up whatever they can.

Rock Band 3 May Teach You to Play for Reals
Nov 06, 2009 - 6:50 PM - by modeps
Rock Band 3 hasn't been officially announced yet, but 1Up has a story from a website called Plastic Axe. In it, they link to both the Boston Herald and Chicago Tribune (yeah, there are 4 sources total here), where George Harrison's son Dhani claims Rock Band 3 will be more real so people will actually be able to learn how to play.

Quote:
"I'm working on Rock Band 3' and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game," Harrison said.

"Give me a couple years, it's going to happen."
Not sure this is what people are looking for, but hey... it's progression right?

Visually Impaired Gamer Sues Sony
Nov 06, 2009 - 5:55 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot is reporting a lawsuit, filed by a visually impaired gamer, alleges Sony is violating the Americans with Disabilities Act by not making its games more accessible with reasonable modifications.

Quote:
But now, one visually impaired gamer has gone beyond simply requesting accessibility features and is demanding them by way of a lawsuit. Last month, disabled gamer Alexander Stern filed suit against Sony, Sony Online Entertainment, and Sony Computer Entertainment America in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The suit alleges that Sony is violating the Americans with Disabilities Act by failing to implement features to make its games accessible to visually impaired gamers.

The Americans with Disabilities Act states that, "No individual shall be discriminated against on the basis of disability in the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of any place of public accommodation by any person who owns, leases (or leases to), or operates a place of public accommodation."

According to the suit, Sony ignored repeated requests through postal mail and e-mail to come up with reasonable modifications to its games to make them more accessible. The suit, which doesn't mention SOE games by name but appears to focus on massively multiplayer online titles, requests the addition of visual cues to point gamers to their destinations for gamers with "disability impaired visual processing."

Out of Hell Mod Finally Released!
Nov 06, 2009 - 5:31 PM - by atariv8
From the website:

Quote:
Out Of Hell is both a standalone game and total conversion for Unreal Tournament 2004. It is a horror-themed first-person adventure that takes place within Grinwood, an industrial town devastated by a zombie plague.

Players will assume the role of Donovan Ling, a police officer sent from a neighboring city to investigate a garbled transmission from Grinwood. You must traverse a variety of areas while staying alive long enough to uncover the truth behind the mysterious zombie plague!
One guy, Long Nguyen, has been making this think for over 6 years. Here's the download page.

I don't think the stand alone game is available yet but I know what I'm playing this weekend after reinstalling UT2004. I've been waiting on this one for what seems like forever.

CoD: Modern Warfare 2 Pirate Arrested
Nov 06, 2009 - 3:27 PM - by Emabulator

VentureBeat is reporting police have arrested one person who was allegedly involved in a scheme to sell pirated copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, bundled with Xbox 360 consoles, via a listing on Craigslist.

Quote:
The posting last Thursday on Craigslist was alarming. Someone was selling a Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 bundle, with both a console and a game, for $500. The problem was that Modern Warfare 2, one of the most anticipated games of the year, doesn’t officially go on sale until Nov. 10.

Activision Blizzard, the game’s publisher, called in IPCybercrime.com, a Dallas private investigation firm that specializes in online investigations. The investigators tracked down the seller and stumbled into a scheme to pirate the game and sell a bunch of fake copies over the Internet. While the bust led to the arrest of just one hacker among many, it sheds light on the shadowy underground of the business of illegal piracy. It also offers a peak at how investigators try to head off a major piracy disaster before it happens.

“It all happened very fast,” said Rob Holmes, owner of IPCybercrime. “If these guys get their stuff out, then they can do some major damage to sales and spoil it for everybody. We plug leaks every day, but this was one of the biggest ones of the year.”

Torchlight Update 1.12 Released
Nov 06, 2009 - 11:12 AM - by pwnophobia

Everyone but Steam users can now access the Torchlight 1.12 Patch and Runic Games' Travis Baldree explains, here, that the Steam version needs a bit more testing before release.

Quote:
This is a FULL REINSTALL. The packaged files for the patch changed entirely to improve loading times, so a full reinstall is necessary.
If you are patching, you'll need to uninstall your previous version.

BACK UP YOUR SAVE GAMES! Your uninstaller may ask you if you want to delete your save games. Make sure that it is UN CHECKED!
If you want to be extra safe, you can manually back up your saves - I'd recommend this. Better safe than sorry!

A terrible judge comes like a thief in the night. While the world sleeps, everything changes. In the diseased light of a festering sun, planes drop from the sky, machines sputter and stop, and the graves of the shrieking damned burst open. Angels from hell clothe themselves in the flesh of corpses to form an unholy army. Dreaming of his father hammering his way out of a coffin, Gary Holland is jolted awake by the phone to learn that his father is dead. Bickering over infidelity and religion, the family gathers for the funeral... and confronts hell on earth at the Jersey Shore. Hounded from cellar to sewer, the staggering, bloodied survivors of the Holland clan are pushed remorselessly to choose between black despair and hopeless faith.

Minors Can't Use Twitter on the Xbox 360
Nov 06, 2009 - 9:10 AM - by modeps

Major Nelson wanted to let everyone know that if you're a minor (below the age of 18) you won't be able to take advantage of any new Dashboard updates that are coming soon. No Twitter, no Facebook, no Last.FM. Why is this? Because the parental controls on the Xbox 360 don't support the apps. They're working on it, but when it hits later this month for everyone... no soup for you youngsters.

Quote:
As some of you might be aware, those under the age of 18 are not able to access Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm in our public preview. I want to you let you know that this will remain the case when it launches to the world soon. We made this decision because as it stands now, parents aren’t able to use Family Settings to customize which of these applications their children can access. In order to offer an age-appropriate environment for everyone, we decided to turn off these applications for those Gold members under the age of 18. As expected, this has been a hot topic with the preview users. We want to make sure everyone was aware, however, that the development team is working on an update that gives parents the choice of which social applications their children can access. This means that Xbox LIVE members between the ages of 13 and 17 will be able to use Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm as long as their parents approve. The team hope to roll this out several weeks after launch and I will update you on the exact date as it gets closer.

Kotaku has what looks like a viral video for an upcoming sequel to Kane & Lynch. Details of the video are in the quote below or you can check it out here. I'll let you be the judge.

Quote:
The video appears to have been shot by a Chinese restaurant's surveillance cameras, filmed in black and white, featuring two naked men—with their unmentionables blurred out—running from gunfire. One, who appears to be Lynch, appears to have been hit by some of that gunfire, tumbles over a dining table and is attacked by a dog. The other man, possibly Kane, beats the dog away with some type of blunt object.

Impulse and Gamers Gate Also Refuse Modern Warfare 2
Nov 06, 2009 - 5:51 AM - by modeps
Citing the same "Steamworks integration" that Direct2Drive did yesterday (despite D2D already selling Steamworks enabled titles), VE3D learns today that both Gamers Gate and Impulse have decided to not sell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Quote:
Impulse will not be selling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 either. We share some of the same concerns as Direct2Drive over the bundling of the Steam client with the game. The most obvious issue is the forced inclusion of a competitor's store that blocks us from carrying the game.

Our issues with the game are solely with the Steamworks bundling. We enjoy a great relationship with Activision and would love to sell the title, but not with Steam.
Quote:
Gamersgate have confirmed that they're also refusing to sell Modern Warfare 2, for the exact same reasons.
Hey! Look at us! We're taking a stand too!

Direct2Drive Refusing to Sell Modern Warfare 2
Nov 05, 2009 - 7:10 PM - by Emabulator
Gamasutra is reporting that Direct2Drive is refusing to sell Infinity Ward's upcoming FPS, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, in protest of its Steamworks integration.

Quote:
IGN-owned digital game distributor Direct2Drive announced today it's refusing to sell Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PC, protesting the game's integration with Valve's Steamworks.

"We don’t believe games should force the user to install a Trojan Horse," said the company -- referring to Steam, in a statement explaining its decision.

The company says its beef is not with publisher Activision -- in fact, Direct2Drive will offer a $5 coupon off of some of the Activision titles it sells as a compensation to its users.

Direct2Drive instead opposes MW2's Steamworks integration -- as an online storefront for digital download games, it competes directly with Valve's Steam service in some areas. In the highest-profile endorsement of Valve's digital tools to date, Infinity Ward will use the Steam client to update, support and authenticate the game.
I don't blame them for not wanting to sell a game with Steamworks integration, but it's too bad the folks at Direct2Drive don't feel the same way about SecuROM. I purchased an Atari published title, Test Drive Unlimited, from Direct2Drive and have to enter a manual activation code every time I play the game (the support staff there was helpful with partially resolved matter). Considering there is no mention of the game using SecuROM on Direct2Drive, I'd call that a "Trojan Horse."

Probably No Dedicated Servers for RAGE
Nov 05, 2009 - 4:08 PM - by modeps

Oh dear, something else has happened that will make PC gamers curse life itself. The single greatest computer mind of our generation, John Carmack (aka Rocketman), has told Variety that RAGE probably won't be dealing with that dedicated server nonsense.

Quote:
John Carmack, co-founder and technical wizard of the developer, says the company doesn’t plan to support dedicated servers for the multiplayer component of “Rage,” id’s upcoming new action game.

“It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers,” he says.

Infinity Ward made the same decision for “Modern Warfare 2” and has been facing a massive backlash among its fans. The inevitable online petition has gathered over 183,000 signatures and even the developer has acknowledged the backlash.

LittleBigPlanet Sequel Not Likely
Nov 05, 2009 - 4:01 PM - by lost

Little Big Planet level designer Danny Leaver has effectively stated that Media Molecule are not working on a sequel to the critical success that made the develop famous. Fans will be re-assured that this is because they wish to support the existing community.

Quote:
“I think what you’ve seen so far from LittleBigPlanet, that’s the way it’s going to continue.” said producer Martin Lynagh, referring to DLC and updates for the existing game.

Level designer Danny Leaver said that a sequel would fragment the LBP community. “We’d never want to do that. That’d be the most counterproductive thing you could do I think.” he said.

Media Molecule have given what is surely the most dedicated post – launch community support in the history of video games, and such dismissal of a sequel should serve to reassure fans still further.
More from Critical Gamer.

It'd be cool if they made it a pack-in ala Wii Sports.

BioWare Defends This Year's Horse Armor
Nov 05, 2009 - 3:57 PM - by lost

Moving in to defend EA, Bioware lead systems designer George Zoeller has stated that the DLC for Dragon Age that gives you extra inventory space for a considerable fee has nothing to do with the publisher wanting to make more money.

Quote:
A highly-critical article from Fidget lambasted the game for limiting item slots to 60. The main point of contention comes from selling the "Warden's Keep," which allows for extra storage space, for an additional $7 or 560 Microsoft Points. Specifically, the piece cast an accusatory finger at EA for the "scam," which is why Zoeller commented to clear up the matter.

"For what it's worth, EA has nothing to do with this," wrote Zoeller. "The game was designed with limited inventory for a number of reasons, the least of which being to limit save-game size and therefore load times." He went on to explain that the game was originally designed with additional storage in the camp area, but that there are several camps, and people sometimes lost their items. "By the time this problem was discovered we had not enough time to fix the problem, plus, we decided that it was not really necessary anyway since the item limitation was rather generous." He says the Warden's Keep DLC was simply added as a nice additional feature after some brainstorming. "I'm fine with you being upset about the item limit design in the game... but I must protest the 'Oh EA is pushing the limit for more money' tagline, because that's just not what has happened."
Cheers 1up.

Gran Turismo 5 Cost a Bomb to Develop
Nov 05, 2009 - 3:53 PM - by lost

How much is a bomb? Today it has been officially classified as being equal to around $60 million.

Quote:
...Yamauchi roughly calculated the cost of creating Gran Turismo 5: a cool $60 million. That's what five years of development on a single game has cost Polyphony Digital thus far, an amount Yamauchi says was totally justified in order to "get it right."

"We threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch ... It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4."

Gearbox's Pitchford Calls Out Valve, Again.
Nov 05, 2009 - 2:14 PM - by modeps
Randy Pitchford, frontman for the Gearbox Software band, talked to the UK's Official Playstation Magazine and had some not so kind things to say about Valve yet again. This is the second time he's openly criticized the way Valve does things.

Quote:
“I noticed something on the net not too long ago. Doug Lombardi had to take a swipe at the PS3 again, and I thought it was foolish,” Pitchford told OPM. “I read it the same way I read fanboys. Like there’s a guy who bought the Sony platform and he’s a Sony guy, so he decides he’s going to spend a certain percentage of his time bashing Microsoft. And there’s a guy on Microsoft doing the same thing.

“Those guys are childish and narrow minded, it’s the same kind of thing.

“Valve think their own stuff is the only stuff that matters, to the point where they have their own distribution platform. It’s like, I don’t care about retail, about Marketplace, or PSN, I’m going to have Steam.

“It’s cool, it’s good, and they’re doing a good job but at the same time they’re reliant on the rest of the world. They had to do that [Left 4 Dead] deal with EA. When I see the L4D ad on the television I don’t see a Valve logo, I see an EA logo, and when I bought it, I bought it at a store”.
There are several sources for this one. VG247 got it from GameInformer, who got it from AnalogHype, who got it from UK's OPM.

Here we go again... I wonder how many copies Borderlands has sold on Steam.

This is what the HUD looks like. In the bottom left, you can see your squadmates health and names.
Right above the radar shows what perks you are carrying. When I played there were 3 perks-sprinting, cloaking, and halogram.
The sprinting makes you run when you hold LB,
cloaking makes you invisible (when you cloak your radar jams and you can't really hear anything around you).
The halogram creates a hologram of yourself, so enemies will shoot at both.

Synchronize and Backup Saved Games from any Computer
Nov 05, 2009 - 1:19 PM - by modeps
Over on the Steam forums, user Kitzinger1 has put together a nice little guide for people who either game in multiple locations, or want to make sure they have a backup of all their saved files. It uses a combination of a couple tools, and has some system requirements (like needing to be NTFS formatted), but it sounds to me like it's a pretty good alternative to losing your saved games or constantly copying files.

Quote:
To use this guide your Hard Drives have to be NTFS formatted. If they are FAT32 formatted then I believe this Guide won’t work. I believe that you have to be running at least Windows 2000 for this to work also but I’m just going to say Windows XP.

You’re going to need to know where your saved games are for this to work. I’m not going into how this works or why because that’s just too much for me to write. That it works and works well should be good enough. I will give a brief description of the programs and if you want to read more there is plenty there.

You will need to download these two programs.

ATLUS ANNOUNCES FIRST-PERSON SCIENCE FICTION RPG
SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI®: STRANGE JOURNEY™ FOR NINTENDO DS™
Within our own world, a new frontier awaits...

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- NOVEMBER 5, 2009 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today announced Shin Megami Tensei®: Strange Journey™, a first-person science fiction RPG for Nintendo DS™. A startlingly original entry in the award-winning Shin Megami Tensei universe, Strange Journey takes the heralded RPG franchise to exciting new frontiers. The game has already released in Japan to strong demand and critical acclaim, earning a 10/9/9/8 from Famitsu, the highest score the popular magazine has ever awarded a Shin Megami Tensei title.

In the near future, a mysterious, growing, black void appears at the Earth's southern pole. Unable to determine its cause and powerless to stop its deadly encroachment, humanity sends an elite team of explorers into the heart of the phenomenon, just as Strange Journey's look and feel represent a return to the heart of Shin Megami Tensei, bringing to mind the all-time classic Nocturne™. With over 300 demons to bribe, coerce, and negotiate with to gain assistance in battle, Strange Journey is every bit the deep, rewarding RPG experience fans have come to expect from the SMT franchise, yet delivered with a fresh new sci-fi story that taps into mature themes of morality and introspection.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey for Nintendo DS is currently scheduled for release in Spring 2010.

Microtransactions in WoW

Apparently, in addition to the thirty or so other ways Blizz has come up with to get money from players, they are now willing to sell in game pets for 10 bucks each.

Quote:
Generally, microtransactions are used in free MMORPGs, offering basic gaming without a subscription fee but offering premium items for a cash price. However, today Blizzard introduced two items WoW subscribers can now purchase: the Pandaren Monk and Lil' K.T., a miniature litch. Both items will cost $10 each, however Blizzard is donating $5 of each monk sold to the Make-a-Wish Foundation until December 31, 2009 at 11:59 PDT.
On the brighter side, they still have a deal going where they will happily take your pesky soul off your hands for just $14.95 per month.

Nov 05, 2009 - 10:25 AM - by pwnophobia

DICE sends a long word that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 beta will be PS3 exclusive and will be downloadable on November 19th. XBOX 360 and PC will get an open demo "early next year."

Quote:
The Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer beta will feature the Arica Harbor map, where up to 24 players can compete in one of the game’s four intense multiplayer modes called Rush. This new map displays a superb balance of vehicle and infantry combat, as the American assault unit attacks the Russian army base with full force, advancing further through a beautiful desert town and towards the industrial area in a desperate attempt to overtake the Arica Harbor. Heavy vehicle warfare on the first bases gradually turns into an intense infantry fight as the level progresses, showcasing this best-in-class online war experience.

Valve: L4D2 Preorders are 4x L4D's
Nov 05, 2009 - 9:58 AM - by modeps

CVG (via VG247) talked to Valve's Chet Faliszek and found out that despite the "boycott," Left 4 Dead 2 has seen four times the amount of preorders that the first game did.

Quote:
"As we get closer to launch we see the reaction to the demo, pre-orders are four times what Left 4 Dead 1 was, people's excitement, the boycott itself and how it's changed... I think people are just excited now," he said.

As for the infamous boycott, Faliszek says Valve always planned to continue updating the original Left 4 Dead. "One of the weird things at E3 was we knew we weren't showing the complete package, we knew there was a whole bunch of stuff we were holding back but we wanted to show something," he said.

Infinity Ward Attempts to Demistify Lack of MW2 Dedicated Servers
Nov 05, 2009 - 8:40 AM - by defiant
MTV recently interviewed Bowling concerning Infinity Ward's baffling decision to omit dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2 on PC.

Unsurprisingly, many will find his explanations less than satisfying, and in most cases down right insulting.

I wish I could find a job where I was paid copious amounts of money to lie and spin PR bullshit all day long.

1UP Talks Robert Bowling & Modern Warfare 2 PC
Nov 05, 2009 - 7:57 AM - by defiant
Josh McC's at 1Up has posted a brilliant, coherent and well thought out editorial on his blog responding to some of the PR and marketing rhetoric being disseminated by Robert Bowling and Infinity Ward in an attempt to ameliorate discontent expressed by the PC gaming community.

These issues have been the subject of much controversy and consternation, and Josh has made a commendable effort at succinctly explaining why people are concerned and what is at stake, but boldly calling out Bowling and Infinity Ward on their subversive and abhorred behavior.

Quote:
I realize that on one level this is "just a video game" but on a whole different level this embodies the ethically shiftless state of the industry. Whether or not gaming in and of itself is worth civil unrest is irrelevant. However what "gaming" does provide is a front row seat to the transitional growth of an industry and how politics subtly disrupt and eventually usurp the foundational elements that made it great. If Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 successfully sets a precedent with its marketed "improvements" to the pc community , you're overlooking a very significant cultural shift within the original community of the collective gaming industry. Regardless of whether of not they do succeed, the implications of Infinity Ward's intent are far reaching and is an excellent platform on which to address issues of centrality, pirating, politics, and corporate influence. Of course these issues aren't immediately new but Modern Warfare 2 reignites the scenario with unmatched publicity. Robert Bowling has blatantly lied, baited and switched the gaming community with deliberate marketing drivel to receive only an uninspired footnote of a response from the gaming media, that are "outcrying" with little more than complacent speculation.

What's in the Box?
Nov 04, 2009 - 6:01 PM - by modeps

Today I came home to a strange looking box. It was wrapped in a paper bag style wrap, as well as a cellophane cover. The return address was someone I knew, so I decided to avoid calling the CDC and dive in to find just what the depths held.

EA: Digital Sales Offsetting Retail Challenges
Nov 04, 2009 - 4:22 PM - by Emabulator

Gamasutra is reporting that Electronic Arts' CEO John Riccitiello said digital sales could offset the sluggish sales of games at retail.

Quote:
Looking at the iPhone market, it's one of many digital arenas to which EA looks to recoup some of the damage from a cash-strapped consumer at retail. "The traditional packaged goods business has been a little challenged so far this year," he says.

"The other end of the world, online games that you download, games you get by the way of iPhone for example, that totally digital business is up so strong that it’s off-setting the challenge we see at retail."

We're still looking for community created questions to enter in the mix and have gotten several so far, but if you want something answered, speak now or forever hold your peace. Before we figured that we would simply be talking to the two main men, but it looks like they're adding some more guests to the roster. We'll be talking to Max Schaefer (CEO), Travis Baldree (President), Jason Beck (Art Designer), Wonder Russell (Minister of Culture) and possibly John Dunbar (Zombie Pyrotechnician).

So, get your questions in (and wish me luck in their epic presence)!

Note: Torchlight is available at Direct2Drive, Steam or straight from the source.
